Diatonic accordions (sometimes called "button boxes") have the most widespread use in the world's folkmusic traditions. Because the instruments were light and relatively inexpensive they traveled with immigrants around the globe. The word "diatonic" refers to music that stays within one key. Each row of a diatonic accordion plays a major scale. Another feature of this kind of accordion is that a different note plays on the push and another on the pull. Thus the player must alternate the bellows direction very often in order to pick out the melodies. Chords on a diatonic accordion are few and stick to the basic 3 chords of much folk music (tonic, subdominant and dominant). |
